The Design of the food tray was created to work with current U.k infurstructure.
This means for the tray to be zero waste and zero trace my personal design parameters, this food tray has to be home compostable, and for all the home owners in the U.K that don’t compost, leave no trace as part of black bin waste collection. Black bin waste in the U.K is generally incinerated.
To make no trace possible as part of incineration a clean no toxic burn leaving non toxic ash is needed.
I set about designing a material for the packaging tray that was made out of waste materials so that the packaging had no impact on the environment.
I used materials that are currently been used as biofuels, these are coffee granules and hemp fibre.
The resulting videos show the evolution of burn quality and an evolution of a bettering material design for the purpose of food tray.
You-tub link to a video showing a test burn of the tray. the video shows that the tray struggled to catch light. I realised that by including cardboard in my material design I had created a product that smolders rather than burns.
I took the paper board out of my material, and got gret burn results.
The video link shows a tray that was inferior in build quality to the first but burns hot and for over 10 minutes.
The bellow link shows an off-cut from a final design material for use in the final tray design. The burn time is over 3 minutes long, lit easily with a match and produced little to no ash. guidelines given by George May CCO at Bio bean coffee log producer, suggested that the SRF biofuel with a primary use of convenience food tray should be low on ash when burning

An afternoon playing with fire…This is the first food tray made out of hemp and coffee granules: designed to be burned with the intention of being used as fuel in a home or at a plant like @veolia in Leeds. The tray burned well without any fire lighters.
