IAM Fuel

IAM Fuel material, applied to single use food contact packaging, is designed for multiple avenues of post-consumer use, fitting the needs of individual consumers and curbside waste collection services local [to the U.K] and global: adding value as a bio-fuel.

The challenge

To provide the local and global community with a single use food packaging solution that can be collected at curbside. Also adding value to the consumer and to waste collection companies. The packaging to be environmentally and economically sustainable to manufacture, use and re-purpose using current and future infrastructure.

The solution

From the waste materials used for manufacture to the use of current infrastructure for materials recovery, disposal, and re-use IAM Fuel is designed to be environmentally and economically sustainably conscious.

IAM tray is made from industry and consumer waste which are organic materials, hemp, coffee granules and potato starch diverting waste from landfill that would ordinarily add to methane gases, which damage the Earth’s ozone layer.

IAM Fuel was designed to deliver the consumer needs of single-use, oven safe convenience food tray that is commonly used for packaging and cooking meals.

IAM Fuel packaging is designed for multiple avenues of post-consumer use, adapting to the needs of the individual consumer; and also adapting to the infrastructure of waste collection services, local [to the U.K] and global.

IAM Fuel is fuel; I designed the material and the packaging for the, secondary consumer use of biofuel because currently in the U.K our black bin waste is incinerated [ reducing landfill by 80 -85%] and the energy harvested used to power homes and industry.        IAM is designed to produce biofuel as part of the anaerobic digestion process. anaerobic digestion and the collection of  waste for the purpose of fuel production is a system currently receiving funds for development.

I didn’t design the food contact tray to be recycled because food waste contaminates waste streams. Currently oven safe trays are not accepted by curbside recycling. The contaminated waste is sent to be incinerated, this is expensive in lost resources and monetary fines.

IAM is designed to add value for the consumer it does this in a holistic way; the system in which IAM sits takes waste that would ordinarily go to landfill and provides a guilt-free single-use packaging solution that has purpose driven secondary uses.

The IAM Fuel packaging can be home composted adding nitrates, the needed heat catalyst of the home compost bin, activating good bacterial and providing lovely mulch for the garden.

IAM Fuel can be used in a home or garden solid fuel burner as an alternative to conventional fuel.

IAM Fuel immediately looks to the future possibilities of local and global energy production and waste collection. The IAM material is made from organic waste streams, taking advantage of future Anaerobic digestion infrastructure which has been currently funded by government.

IAM fuel, when anaerobically digested will produce gasses which are harvested and then used to power homes, industry and vehicles of our future.

The waste from the anaerobic digestion process is used as fertiliser in agriculture. The improved agricultural soil, benefits human and animal health, through the vegetation grown and then consumed.

IAM packaging was designed using renewable waste streams, to leave no waste, or trace and to add value for consumers and waste collection services.

IAM packaging solution was designed for current and future waste collection infrastructure and to be as convenient to reuse and repurpose as the convenience food the packaging holds.

Value delivered

By thinking about the bigger picture and designing for the end game. I designed a packaging material that can be manufactured into single-use food packaging using current tooling and manufacture. The simplicity of the material design is complemented by the use of abundant materials available from industry and consumer waste. Adding value to the consumer and waste collection companies as fuel with multiple harness-able capabilities. Home compost, stove fuel, power from incineration, energy production from anaerobic digestion, which also benefits agricultural soil.

Predictions – Soil erosion will become the next talked about big challenge along with water usage and wastage.
