Taking inspiration from current laminated packaging solutions and there benefits of moisture resistance, gas barriers to protect and preserve the food contained, I set about emulating the layering of materials in my material design and products.
The recycling problems associated with laminated packaging doesn’t apply to IAM Fuel [ the name for my material] because my product is designed to be repurposed as a fuel, not separated to be [down] cycled.
The images below show a plate that I used to model the design on, I didn’t use a tray as I only had one tray mold at this point and the tray mold was being used. I later got more from parkside flexibles… I Used their standard tray because of manufacturing tooling and I was offered their facilities to develop my project. As I am designing for the FMCG market using a current standard tray mold is a good idea because it makes my material design accessible for development and production.





The small cervical model was a tester of how i could compress the material and then laminate the hemp fibre.
Compressing the product and then laminating with the coffee polymer would work in industry as a two-step process, at it could be made with current tooling found in Egg box or colour form manufacture techniques. The coffee polymer would be applied with a spray and baked dry in assembly.




This model was testing the applycation of coffee starch… I just wanted to see and test this singular material, I wanted to test to strength, I suspected that the hemp fibre was adding flexability and strength the the material. this model proved that my assumption were correct as this model is fradgil and brittal.
