Simply Candy – Packaging consultancy into a vegan sweet design.
This project was started when I met Catherine in the local pub as part of a birthday party.
My enthusiasm for sustainable design and the design of materials made her think of her friend Edwin who needs sustainable packaging for his vegan sweet company. The clients who buy from Simply Candy are demanding sustainable packaging design.
Edwin and I met for breakfast. I enjoyed sharing my packaging knowledge and be able to advise and signpost to packaging solutions and company Coveris who can provide a packaging solution made from sugar cane, the polyethline was chosen as a solution because it’s a renewable waste steam to make the material. Polyetheline although not curbside recyclable can be recycled as part of supermarket bag for life deposit schemes, this knowledge was gained at a conference in Harrogate.
The reason for advising to stay with a polymer is to keep the shelf life of the sweets at 2 years. Also, boiled sweets need a waterproof gas barrier.
Edwin needs a shelf ready solution because his business is still small, although this is a premium brand and therefore there is some wiggle room on the cost of packaging. like many premium brands, they are choosing to reflect their packaging choice in product costs. Percol coffee is a great example
This packaging project developed into a fun exploration into designing a vegan chewy sweet. the base ingredients were the same as my edible polymer SEAsoning I swapped out the water for a natural vegan cordial. I used my family to test the sweets, one of which as a nut allergy, so it was fun arriving with sweets that all three children could enjoy. I got the thumbs up from a tough crowd.

[Side note-feedback given from an interview, I was told I had a lack of corporate experience. My lack of corporate experience is my USP, I am an open and friendly, and keen to keep dialogue without fear of challenging, My 20 years experience as a hairdresser has taught me how to converse with people across demographics and social backgrounds]
