Smart Sock

Project start:

This project is completely self-directed which I like because it gives me the freedom to develop a project that has value and purpose.
(Take the time to look at my previous blog posts and you will see an interest in sustainable materials, related to packaging design.)
Initially, I wanted to give myself a brief that stepped away from material design and solving global issues using packaging as a vehicle, and focus on developing ideas using technology to prevent injury during sports activity, however during rational of the project ‘smart sock’ early research showed the idea, and technology has been designed and been used.

I contacted Dupont and asked for information and samples, their initial response was helpful, however even though I copied in my lecturer to correspondence, I didn’t receive the fabric samples.

Whilst interning for Presca sustainable sportswear – I learnt about the interaction of textiles on the human body’s largest organ – our skin.

I contacted the company below Chichampe because they make clothes out of SEACell a fabric made sustainably from seaweed.

Seaweed benefits the health of wearer by naturally wicking away moisture, anti-bacterial, anti-U.V.

Chichampe fabric SEACELL doesn’t contain any mineral oils, therefore not having the detrimental caconergenic health effects of polymer-based fabrics.

Moving away from polymers and towards natural fabrics is particularly important in active wear because when we exercise our skins pours open and we absorb the chemicals into our bloodstream.

When we exercise we sweat to dispel harmful chemicals.

Wearing polymers has the potential of creating the opposite, absorpsion, not dispel.

Creatives work best within a team. I have a fantastic network of peers in the industry and colleagues at the university.

I regularly ask for advice, help and use these contacts as trusted sounding boards for ideas.

A network of creatives is important when innovating as it helps to keep idea generation free and open.

My initial research into smart socks was through discussion: Email and chatting with company Presca, who I continue to have a great working relationship with.

Through the summer I had worked on patterns for Barefoot running socks, this feed into multisport socks. A sock that can be worn by triathletes transitioning from running to cycling.

The work spent in the summer lead to the idea of a smart sock, a sock that would prevent injury through measuring the cadence of a cyclist and the pressure points of a runners gate.

Through a friend at the women in Leadership, I discovered the technology to print circuit boards this initially fed into ideas relating to packaging design, later fed into the ideology of smart sock.

The idea of textiles having a woven technology, reading what is happening, heartbeat, moisture loss, sweat. body heat. The textiles have been able to respond to these influences to prevent injury or just keep the wearer confortable.

All these open discussions lead to fabric research, and market research leading to the conclusion that a ‘smart sock’ has in fact been done!

The fabric technology is there, the sock design patters are available.

So my conclusion taking into account my other internship commitments at The retail institute and extracurricular project with Simply Candy and most recently with Iceland to take the conceptual mushroom growing to package forward, of which was part of SEAsoning project breif.

My carrier goal is to Innovate new sustainable materials.

The mushroom paper was thought about as part of a previous project SEAsoning, an edible packaging polymer.

Mushroom paper:

The idea, the concept is to design into a packaging material best and worst case of consumer behaviour.

Best case re-use the paper: The packaging in the home, using the packaging to grow mushrooms on a window sill.

The paper made from mushrooms/or recycled wood pulp (curb side recycling) and encapsulating fungi spaws that grow into edible mushrooms when planted in compost and watered.

The packaging as well as branding the product inside, protecting during transit, when home and reaching the end of that use. can be Re-use, re-purposed. The paper can be composed at home or curbside re-cycled…

The cleaver bit!

Designing for the worst case, if the paper packaging is littered on land the packaging breaks down leaving no trace, the fungi spaws encapsulated in the packaging join the largest organism/network of mycelium that envelops our Earth.

The Mycyclim will help to break down chemicals in the soil that has been created by prior littering.
